Broken Today shows the status of online services from their official status pages. You can read every page without an account. This page explains the little we record about visitors, why, and how to reach us.

Who is responsible

For anything about your data, write to hi@brokentoday.com. A person reads every message.

Reading the site

Our server records each request: the page, the time, the response code, how long it took and the browser's user agent string. It does not record your IP address. We use these records to keep the site running and to spot abuse, and the server deletes them after 30 days.

The site and its database run on servers in the European Union (Hetzner in Germany, LeaseWeb in the Netherlands).

Visitor statistics

We count visits with Matomo, which runs on our own server in Germany, not at an analytics company. It records the pages you view, the referring page, your browser, device, screen size, approximate location and your IP address, and sets two first-party cookies: _pk_id (recognises a returning browser, 13 months) and _pk_ses (the current visit, 30 minutes). We use the numbers only to see which pages people read. They are not shared, sold or used for advertising.

To opt out, block cookies for brokentoday.com in your browser or use a tracker blocker. The site works the same without them.

E-mail alerts

When you ask for alerts about a service, we store your e-mail address, the service, the time and the IP address of the request (to stop people signing up others in bulk), and later when you confirmed, when we last e-mailed you and when you unsubscribed. We use the address only to send alerts about the services you chose - no newsletters, no marketing.

  • Nothing is sent until you confirm from the first e-mail. An unconfirmed request is deleted after 7 days.
  • Every alert has an unsubscribe link. After you unsubscribe, the record is deleted within 30 days.
  • The e-mails are sent through Amazon Simple Email Service in Frankfurt (Amazon Web Services EMEA SARL), which only delivers them.
  • Replies to hi@brokentoday.com arrive at our own mail server in Finland.

The legal basis for alerts is your consent, which you can withdraw at any time by unsubscribing. Server records and statistics rely on our legitimate interest in running the site and understanding how it is used.

Cookies and local storage

  • _pk_id and _pk_ses - visitor statistics, described above.
  • .AspNetCore.Antiforgery.* - a security cookie set only on the alert confirmation and unsubscribe pages. It protects those forms and ends with your browser session.
  • sb-theme - your light or dark theme choice, kept in your browser's local storage and never sent to us.

We have no advertising, social media buttons or third-party tracking. Service logos are served from our own server.

Your rights

You can ask us what we hold about you, have it corrected or deleted, object to its use, or ask for a copy. Write to hi@brokentoday.com from the address in question and we will answer within 30 days. You can also complain to a data protection authority, for example the one in the country where you live.

Changes

If we change what we record, we will update this page and the date at the top.

Broken Today reads each company's official public status page every 2 minutes. We are not affiliated with any of the listed services, and a green light here only means the vendor reports no problem. Service names and logos are trademarks of their owners and are used only to identify each service.
